Other fun things that Kurt
really likes - an admittedly eclectic gathering of odds and ends
Hey, a good ship or war movie makes a great background to ship modeling - or a nice break when things get frustrating!
The
Final Countdown. Ok, lets not look to closely at the science fiction
premise, but this story of the USS Nimitz being transported back to December
6, 1941 is still entertaining, with plenty of eye candy for the naval enthusiast.
A guilty pleasure perhaps...Available March 30, 2004
Master
and Commander, The Far Side of the World. Buy it for the battles,
but enjoy it for the story too. The special effects were nominated
for an Academy award, and it shows. Who know what will happen when these
wizards take on a modern naval battle someday. Available April 20,
2004
The
Hunt for Red October VHS I always wanted to use the phrase
" a ripping good yarn". And now I have. The Classic Tom Clancy book,
made into a good movie. Sometimes even Hollywood surprises. But
read the book if you get a chance.
DVD
version here.
Crimson
Tide (1995) - Nonsensical story with some good acting and great shots
of subs in action DVD
Das
Boot - The Director's Cut (1982) - One of the great ones, a must have
for your naval war movie collection DVD
Sink the Bismarck Another classic movie, with special effects that
hold up surprisingly well for a 40 year old film. The obligatory love
interest does not detract from good battle scenes. A must for Bismarck
fans! VHS Now on
DVD,
in a widescreen format and with some extras, such as a movietone reel on
the chase.
The
Enemy Below The submarine versus destroyer movie of all time.
VHS
Run
Silent, Run Deep (1958) The Clark Gable - Burt Lancaster classic DVD
Tora! Tora! Tora! VHS Great effects, a no nonsense story.
In some ways, superior, even in effects, to Pearl Harbor.

Midway
(Collector's Edition) (1976) Would have been a better movie had
it paid more attention to Tora Tora Tora, but still a decent telling of an
important story. DVD
They
Were Expendable (1945) A classic John Ford account of PT Boat Combat
DVD
Pearl
Harbor (2001) Some great effects, some abuse of recent warships, and
a maudlin love story. This DVD is pretty cool, or get the
VHS
version
U-571
- Collector's Edition (2000) - a sometimes silly film, but check out
the cool depth charge effects. Just try and ignore that "German Destroyer"
if you can... DVD
K-19 -
The Widowmaker (2002) available December 10, 2002 - Harrison Ford stars
in this cold war potboiler DVD
The
Guns of Navarone (Special Edition) (1961) - One of the classic war movies
DVD
In
Harm's Way (1965) - A great movie, with perhaps the worst special effects
seen in many decades. They blew up a lot of plywood in this movie,
but John Wayne playing the Rock (the Admiral, not the WWF incarnation) is
worth the price of admission. DVD
Captain
Horatio Hornblower (1951) The classic movie about CS Foresters
Napoleonic naval hero. VHS
The
Crimson Pirate (1952) A light hearted and very fun movie, with Burt Lancaster
swashbuckling his way across the screen. The soundtrack is very
good too! VHS.
Now
available on DVD!
Pirates
of the Caribbean - another fine Pirate movie, with great effects.
James
Cameron's Expedition Bismarck - Great animation of the battle, underwater
footage, and film of the Bismarck passing through the Kiel canal are just
a few of the features of this 2 DVD set that make it worth owning. DVD
Victory
at Sea - now on DVD, this classic series features outstanding wartime
footage, coupled with some of the finest music of all time. A must
have!
The
World at War - the best documentry on World War II ever. Highly
recommended, now on DVD.
The
Great Ships - Destroyers - traces the development of the destroyer

Anti-Submarine
Warfare Watch as the US Navy practices anti sub warfare VHS
Nuclear
Weapons of the U.S. Navy (Declassified Films) VHS
National
Geographic's Search for Battleship Bismarck (1989) VHS
Mighty
Mo: Battleship USS Missouri BB-63 (1998) VHS
USS
Arizona - USS Missouri: From Tragedy to Victory (2002) VHS
Pearl
Harbor - The USS Utah & USS Arizona Revisited VHS
Situation
Critical - The U.S.S. Forrestal (1997) VHS
QE2:
The Queen of Ships The last of the real ocean liners VHS
Walking with Dinosaurs OK, not about ships, but what the
heck. This video is amazing. Through special effects and digital
cleverness, the producers who made this video have made a 3 hour documentary
that looks like it was shot by National Geographic. See dinosaur births,
life, and inevitable violent deaths on land, sea and in the air.
Breathtaking visuals. Get the
DVD
version if you have one of those.
We
Were Soldiers (2002) A great war movie; don't let Mel Gibson drive you
away - no mugging here, just an intense telling of the story of the first
large scale battle between US and North Vietnamese forces in Vietnam at Ia
Drang. Embellished a bit from the book, but it still rings true to the spirit
of those who fought in that great battle. Be sure to check out the deleted
scenes, especially the one at the lake. DVD. You can get a copy of
the
book
here.
Band
of Brothers (2001) - The highly acclaimed HBO Miniseries that chronicled
"E" company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from training to D-Day, Holland,
Market Garden, Bastogne and into Germany. I have watched this series
twice so far, and still find it moving and powerful. DVD Also available
on
VHS.
Schindler's
List (1993) Oscar winning picture by Steven Spielberg about the
Holocaust, a moving experience, tough to watch, but you owe it to yourself
to see it.
From
the Earth to the Moon. Highly acclaimed HBO Series now on DVD.
My favorite episode is "Spider", dealing with the design and construction
of the Lunar Module, but the whole series is fantastic. Highly
recommended
